Renting Tools For Summer Home Improvement Projects

By Jerry Flaugherty

The warmer weather of summer causes many homeowners to begin thinking about outdoor home improvement tasks. One job that improves curb appeal almost instantly and protects the wood used to construct a house is painting. By renting equipment, one can complete work quickly, while giving the house a professional finish.

Exterior surfaces often collect dust and dirt from the street. Over time, most paint will begin to peel. Although it is possible to complete the cleaning and scraping, renting a pressure washer can take a lot of time and work away from the job. This machine connects to an ordinary garden hose, but increases the pressure to blast away loose paint and dirt. The house will need to dry several days before applying paint.

Painting a house, especially one that is more than a single story can require extension ladders to reach the height gable ends. Even though you may have step ladders, they often do not provide the height needed for these areas. Even the pros sometimes need to rent ladders to reach such heights.

Scaffolding can provide a wider surface and longer reach than a ladder alone. The walk board can be adjusted to different heights to allow you to have the reach needed to comfortably complete the job. Use of scaffolding can also reduce the time needed for the task as one is not constantly up and down a ladder.

Masking guns apply masking tape and paper with a single movement. They are ideal for use when preparing to spray paint to quickly mask doors, windows and fixtures. Paint shields can also be used to prevent overspray without having to actually tape every surface.

Paint sprayers can eliminate much of the work of painting a house. These units apply several gallons of product in a single day. The paint should be put in a five gallon bucket for most effective use, but single gallons will work. Ask at the rental facility for basic instructions in using the machine.

Most of these painting tools are not used by homeowners often enough to warrant buying them. Renting makes a better choice and does not clutter a garage with tools that are seldom used. Make sure to know how to safely use each piece of equipment before leaving the rental center to start a home improvement job.
